Teatro

Last year I spent 10 days in Japan and had 30 of the finest meals of my life. The Japanese are almost reverential about food, am attitude I share. Special dishes have the presence of umami. Umami is the fifth sense of taste after salty, sweet, sour and bitter. It means "deliciousness."

Every week I'm going to select one dish that is the essence of umami. This week it's the Italian gelato at Teatro. This ice cream is made with soy milk yet is as thick and creamy as the dairy version. The same cool deliciousness with no cholesterol! No fat!

Two unusual flavors you HAVE to try: stracciatella, similar to chocolate chip, and bacio, the nuttiest chocolate ice cream I've ever tasted. You can sample all 30 flavors if you ask nicely.

Cones are possible but not the norm. Here ice cream becomes art. The most unusual ice cream dish in LVNV: the spaghetti Bolognese. It's vanilla bean ice cream swirled in a bowl to look like pasta. Topped with strawberry sauce. Crumbled white chocolate looks exactly like parmesan cheese. I did a double take.

Teatro is a space age ice cream parlor with a 1940's feel. Swank leather chairs. Marble tables. No counter service. You get waited on. just like on Dobie Gillis. The owners tested the concept in Dusseldorf. Has that European café feel. Great place to hang out.

Starbucks, watch out. Teatro froths its cappuccino from a 120 year old cappuccino machine, flying eagles and all. Just the right mix of java jolt and soothing foam.

If you're looking for a job, Teatro is the place if you're an ice cream lover. You're required to taste every flavor every day so you're in the know! Imagine being paid to eat gourmet goodies until you can't eat another bite.

Teatro is located at 8878 S. Eastern Avenue at Pebble in the Colonnade Shopping Center. It's near the movie theater. The only other place to sample soy based Italian gelato: the Grand Luxe Café at the Venetian.
